Paul Jewell’s Town fell to their third home defeat in a week as an impressive Southampton side left Portman Road with a 5-2 win. The Saints were 3-0 in front at the break through Rickie Lambert (2) and David Connolly, however, Town fought back to 3-2 via Keith Andrews and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, but Adam Lallana added two more late on to seal a deserved victory.

Matty Fryatt’s second half goal was enough to give Hull City a 1-0 victory over the Blues at Portman Road. Town had the better of a first period in which ex-Hull defender Damien Delaney had hit the bar, but the Tigers improved after the break with Fryatt making the most of a defensive lapse with 14 minutes remaining.

Town’s U18s comfortably beat Colchester United 4-1 at Playford Road on Wednesday morning. A brace from Carel Tiofack plus one each from Jidé Maduako (pictured) and Jon Leddy put the young Blues in a commanding position before a late strike from Gus Mufuta reduced the deficit.

Town’s pre-season friendly at Colchester United was abandoned with eight minutes to go at 0-0 after U’s midfielder Andy Bond suffered a facial injury in a collision with his keeper Mark Cousins. Bond required lengthy treatment with the injury considered so severe that an ambulance was brought to the edge of the pitch causing the abandonment, with Bond eventually helped across to it with blood streaming down his face.

Town were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw at League Two Southend on Friday evening despite a brilliant first half goal by Lee Martin. Paul Jewell’s men were the better side in the first half but faded badly in a second period in which Neil Harris netted an equaliser for the home side.

Ronan Murray grabbed a late winner for a Town reserves side as they beat Bury Town 3-2 in the now annual pre-season friendly at Ram Meadow. The home side had gone ahead via skipper Tom Bullard before Jide Maduako and Caolan Lavery saw the Blues into the lead at half-time. After Bury had missed a penalty, Danny Cunningham brought them level with a superb freekick prior to Murray’s late deft flick over the keeper.
